Early Life and Career
Joseph Henry Harvey was born in South Shields, England, on December 19, 1928. His father, a docker, was from Barbados, and his mother was Irish. Harvey grew up in a working-class neighborhood and attended St. Patrick's Catholic School.
From an early age, Harvey displayed a passion for football. He played for his local team, Blue Ground FC, and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1946, at the age of 18, he signed a professional contract with South Shields FC.
Harvey quickly established himself as a talented winger. He was known for his speed, dribbling skills, and ability to score crucial goals. In 1953, he helped South Shields win the Third Division North Championship.
International Career
Harvey's performances for South Shields caught the attention of the English Football Association. In 1955, he became the first black player to represent England. He made his debut against Spain at Wembley Stadium and went on to earn four caps for his country.
Harvey's selection for the England team was a groundbreaking moment in the history of English football. It signaled a shift in attitudes towards black players and helped pave the way for future generations of black footballers.
Managerial Career
After retiring from playing in 1961, Harvey pursued a career in football management. He began as a youth coach at Sunderland and worked his way up through the ranks.
In 1965, Harvey was appointed manager of Fulham. He spent six years at the club and helped them to achieve promotion to the First Division in 1968.
In 1971, Harvey moved to Arsenal, where he became one of the most successful managers in the club's history. He won the FA Cup in 1971 and 1979, and the UEFA Cup in 1970.
Under Harvey's leadership, Arsenal played an attractive and attacking style of football. He was also known for his ability to bring through young players, such as David O'Leary, Liam Brady, and Paul Davis.
Harvey left Arsenal in 1984 and went on to manage Bristol Rovers, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. He retired from management in 1993.
Legacy
Joe Harvey is remembered as one of the greatest pioneers of English football. He was a talented player and a visionary manager who helped to break down barriers and inspire a generation of players and fans.
