Matt Artz's Quest to Empower Rural Communities

Matt Artz is a man with a mission. A mission to empower rural communities in Zimbabwe. He founded 'Back to the Bundu' in 2012, a non-profit organization that provides education, healthcare, and economic opportunities to those living in remote areas.

Back to the Bundu, or BTB for short, is based in the village of Gweru in rural Zimbabwe. Here, 80% of the population lives in poverty and access to education and healthcare is limited. BTB works to change this by providing:

  • Early Childhood Education: BTB runs preschools and early childhood development programs to provide access to quality education for young children.
  • Community Healthcare: BTB provides free medical care, health education, and support to rural communities.
  • Economic Empowerment: BTB offers training and resources to help women and youth start businesses and generate income.

Matt Artz's journey to Zimbabwe began in 2006 when he visited the country to volunteer for a summer. Moved by the poverty he witnessed, he returned in 2012 with a clear vision: to empower rural Zimbabweans to build a better future for themselves and their children.

The Impact of Back to the Bundu

Since its inception, Back to the Bundu has made a significant impact on the lives of rural Zimbabweans:

Education: Over 5,000 children have received early childhood education through BTB's programs. This has improved their cognitive development and prepared them for success in primary school.

Healthcare: BTB's mobile health clinic has provided free healthcare to over 10,000 people in rural communities. The clinic offers treatment for common illnesses, health screenings, and referrals to hospitals for more specialized care.

Economic Empowerment: BTB's micro-financing and business training programs have helped over 500 women and youth start small businesses. These businesses have generated income, provided jobs, and improved the economic well-being of families.

Matt Artz's leadership has been instrumental to BTB's success. His passion, commitment, and tireless efforts have made a real difference in the lives of rural Zimbabweans.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the progress BTB has made, there are still challenges to overcome:

Poverty: Rural Zimbabwe remains one of the poorest areas in the country. Access to basic services and economic opportunities is limited, which makes it difficult for people to escape the cycle of poverty.

Geography: The remote locations of many rural communities make it challenging to deliver services and resources. BTB relies on its network of local partners and community volunteers to reach those in need.

Disease: Common diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS remain a threat to the health of rural Zimbabweans. BTB works to provide access to healthcare and education to prevent and treat these diseases.

Despite these challenges, there are also opportunities for growth and impact:

Government Support: The Zimbabwean government has recognized the importance of rural development and has partnered with BTB on several projects. This support has helped BTB expand its programs and reach more people.

Economic Growth: The growing economy of Zimbabwe provides opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs in rural areas. BTB's micro-financing and business training programs can help people seize these opportunities and generate income.

Technology: The increasing availability of mobile technology in rural areas can be used to deliver healthcare, education, and other services more effectively. BTB is exploring ways to use technology to expand its impact.

Matt Artz's Vision for the Future

Matt Artz's vision for the future of Back to the Bundu is ambitious and inspiring:

Empowering Rural Communities: BTB aims to empower rural communities in Zimbabwe by providing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. This will enable them to lift themselves out of poverty and build sustainable livelihoods.

Training Local Leaders: BTB believes that local leaders are the key to lasting change. The organization trains and mentors local people to lead its programs and become agents of change in their communities.

Scaling Up Impact: BTB aims to scale up its programs and reach more people in rural Zimbabwe. The organization is exploring partnerships with other organizations and government agencies to expand its reach.

How to Support Back to the Bundu

There are many ways to support Back to the Bundu and its mission to empower rural communities in Zimbabwe.

Donate: Financial support is essential to BTB's work. Donations can be made online or by mail and are tax-deductible.

Volunteer: BTB welcomes volunteers to assist with its programs in Zimbabwe. Volunteers can help with teaching, healthcare, business training, and other activities.

Spread the Word: Help BTB's mission by sharing its story with others. Spread the word on social media, talk to friends and family, and help raise awareness about the challenges facing rural communities in Zimbabwe.

Matt Artz and Back to the Bundu are making a real difference in the lives of rural Zimbabweans. Their commitment to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment is inspiring and has the potential to transform communities. By supporting BTB, you can help to empower rural Zimbabweans and create a brighter future for them and their children.
