Kamala Harris made history on January 20, 2021, when she became the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be sworn in as Vice President of the United States. Her historic ascent to the second-highest office in the land is a testament to her determination, resilience, and the power of the American dream.
Harris's life story is one of resilience and perseverance. She was born to immigrant parents in Oakland, California, in 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a breast cancer researcher from India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. Harris's parents instilled in her a strong sense of social justice and a belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind to.
Harris attended Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, D.C., where she earned a degree in political science and economics. She then went on to earn her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After graduating from law school, Harris worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and later as the San Francisco District Attorney.
In 2003, Harris was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She served two terms on the board, during which time she championed progressive causes such as affordable housing, environmental protection, and criminal justice reform.
In 2010, Harris was elected Attorney General of California. She was the first woman and the first Black person to hold the office. As Attorney General, Harris focused on protecting consumers, fighting for civil rights, and reforming the criminal justice system. She also established a number of innovative programs, such as the Back on Track reentry program for parolees and the Open Justice data portal.
In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate. She is the second Black woman to serve in the Senate, after Carol Moseley Braun. In the Senate, Harris has been a vocal advocate for healthcare, education, and gun control. She has also been a strong critic of the Trump administration.
In 2020, Harris ran for president of the United States. Although she did not win the nomination, her campaign was groundbreaking. She was the first Black woman to run for president on a major party ticket. Harris's candidacy inspired many Americans, and she helped to bring attention to the issues facing women and people of color.
In August 2020, Joe Biden selected Harris as his running mate. Harris and Biden went on to win the election, making Harris the first woman and the first Black American to be elected vice president.
