Characters

  • Thomas More: A lawyer and statesman who refuses to sign King Henry VIII's Act of Supremacy.
  • King Henry VIII: The King of England who is determined to have his way, no matter the cost.
  • Cardinal Wolsey: The Lord Chancellor of England who is More's friend and mentor.

  • Margaret Roper: More's daughter who is a strong and independent woman.

Plot

The play begins with More being summoned to the king's court. The king is determined to have More sign the Act of Supremacy, which would make him the head of the Church of England. More refuses to sign the act, as he believes that it is against his conscience.

More's refusal angers the king, and he is imprisoned in the Tower of London. While in prison, More is visited by his friend and mentor, Cardinal Wolsey. Wolsey tries to persuade More to sign the act, but More refuses. Wolsey is eventually replaced by Sir Thomas Cromwell, who is more determined than ever to bring More down.

More is put on trial for treason, and he is found guilty. He is sentenced to death, and he is executed on July 6, 1535.

Themes

  • Conscience: More's refusal to sign the Act of Supremacy is based on his conscience. He believes that it is wrong to go against his beliefs, even if it means death.
  • Loyalty: More is loyal to his king, but he is also loyal to his conscience. He is willing to die rather than betray his beliefs.
  • Power: The play explores the limits of power. The king has the power to execute More, but he cannot force More to change his beliefs.
