Roscoe William Kennedy: The Life and Achievements of a Trailblazing Archivist
Roscoe William Kennedy was born on May 29, 1881, in Collinsport, Indiana. His parents, James and Maggie Kennedy, were farmers who instilled in him a strong work ethic from a young age. After graduating from high school, Kennedy attended the University of Indiana, where he earned a degree in history in 1904. He then went on to receive a masters degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1906.
Kennedy began his career as a high school history teacher in Greencastle, Indiana. In 1910, he joined the staff of the State Historical Society of Indiana as an assistant curator. He was promoted to curator in 1912 and served in that role until his retirement in 1956.
During his tenure at the State Historical Society of Indiana, Kennedy oversaw the expansion of the society's collections and the construction of a new building to house them. He also played a key role in the development of the Indiana Historical Bureau and the Indiana History Conference.
