Materials

To weave a reed basket, you will need the following materials:

  • Reed
  • Scissors
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • A pencil or pen
  • A basket mold (optional)

Instructions

To weave a basic reed basket, follow these steps:

1.

Cut the reed into strips that are about 1/2 inch wide and 12 inches long. You will need about 50 strips for a small basket.

2.

Fold the reed strips in half lengthwise and crease them. This will make them more pliable and easier to weave.

3.

Lay out the reed strips in a cross shape, with the ends of the strips overlapping in the center. This will form the base of your basket.

4.

Take one of the reed strips and weave it over and under the other strips, starting at the center. Continue weaving until you have reached the end of the strip.

5.

Take another reed strip and weave it in the opposite direction, starting at the center. Continue weaving until you have reached the end of the strip.

6.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have woven all of the reed strips into the basket.

7.

Trim the ends of the reed strips and tuck them under the other strips. This will help to secure the basket.

Projects

Once you have mastered the basics of reed basket weaving, you can experiment with different weaving patterns and techniques to create unique and beautiful baskets. Here are a few project ideas to get you started:
